Writer, You Need To Be Ready For This, Too.
When Researching The Past…
When researching the past…
You need to be ready to uncover unexpected biases in historical narratives.
Or read my brand new email course, The Memory Scar Technique.
You need to have the resilience to sift through archives filled with dusty, unorganised documents.
You need to be patient while deciphering faded letters that require time and focussssssss.
You need to summon the courage to interview distant relatives who might hold key memories. Call them! Your script will be better for it.
You need to accept that crucial information can sometimes be found in overlooked sources, like family diaries or simply in old newspapers.
You need to understand that the entire process will be messy. And non-linear. And sometimes lonely. (If you want to understand your own process of researching and preparing for a historical role or biopic role a bit better, fill out the survey here.
This journey into history—one that fosters a connection based on deep curiosity, unwavering commitment, genuine care and respect.
At the same time, this can also be a journey that invites you to stop striving for perfection and start engaging with the story as it unfolds…
Here’s to creating authentic, believable characters in our stories,

PS: Just finished working on this course for actors, called The Memory Scar.
