Why They All Look at You

You may have noticed:
In nearly every image I choose — the people from the past look directly at you.

A woman on a passport photo.
A man standing just outside the frame of history.
A child holding their breath behind glass.

None of them look away.

This is not accidental.

In most research or historical consulting, the past is treated like an object — something to observe, document, interpret.

Actors and screenwriters are told to “do the work.” To study. To embody.

But what if the past was not just there to be studied?
What if it looked back?

A direct gaze changes everything.

It asks something of you.
It refuses to be passive.
It creates a moment of tension — of responsibility.

You’re no longer preparing “for” a role.
You’re preparing with someone who once lived.

Their face becomes your scene partner.

I choose these portraits because they remind you —
you are not building fiction.
You are excavating memory.

And memory demands more than costume and cadence.
It demands witness.

This is the foundation of my consulting work. Guten Tag, I am Dr. Barbara from Germany, and I run a historical consulting service for actors.

Whether you're inside The Cabinet of Forgotten Feelings, or in a 1:1 session to Get To Know Your Protagonist, you’re not just collecting facts.

You are being seen by the very people you’re meant to bring back to life.

📷 They’re not just images.
They’re invitations.
